ا نقلاب صنعتی دلیل اصلی پیدایش آلودگی هوا در سه دهه اخیر به شمار می آید.  قبل از1950  آلودگی هوا ناشی از سوخت ذغال سنگ (برای تولید انرژی) بود.  لندن یکی از مشهورترین شهرهایی بود  که شدیدا با مه صنعتی آلوده می شد . در دسامبر  1952طی  5روز هوای سرد مه آلود سمی لندن ، جان 4000 انسان را گرفت. 

امروزه استفاده از سایر سوختهای فسیلی بجای ذغال سنگ همچون سوختهای بنزینی نوع آلودگی را به  تولید مه دود فتوشیمیایی تغییر داده است.

  
چگونگی تولید  مه دود فتوشیمیایی  Photochemical smog

 . در اثر فعالیتهای صنعتی  بشر ترکیبات سمی  جدیدی به عناصر سازنده هوا افزوده شده است. این ترکیبات شیمیایی جدید منجر به  تولید ابر گازی شکل زرد متمایل به قهوه ای را در سطح شهرها می شودکه ما آن را مه دود فتوشیمیایی می نامیم.
